Project Background

A new world-class facility and nexus for excellence in entrepreneurship is taking shape at UC Berkeley, advancing innovative solutions that generate an abundant and clean supply of energy, develop advanced manufacturing technologies, and improve energy-efficient transportation.

UC Berkeley is constructing a new world-class facility and nexus for excellence in entrepreneurship for innovative solutions focused on generating an abundant and clean supply of energy, advanced manufacturing technologies, and energy efficient transportation.

Bakar Labs for Energy & Materials will feature highly flexible wet laboratories and spaces, allowing for scale-up capabilities to support startups rooted in chemistry, materials science, and rapid instrument prototyping, propelled by artificial intelligence and machine learning. The building also has event and collaboration areas as well as a landscaped courtyard shared with the adjacent IGI-Bakar Labs building, providing a welcoming outdoor space for both informal use and organized events.

The new building and its programs are uniquely designed to foster interaction between Berkeley's top researchers and Bay Area, California, national, and international business communities that are driving applied translation.

As part of UC Berkeley's Innovation Zone, Bakar Labs for Energy & Materials will build on the success of Bakar Labs first incubator facility, located in Woo Hon Fai Hall on Bancroft Avenue.

Site preparation began in the summer of 2024 with the demolotion of University Hall. Work on Bakar Labs for Energy & Materials began after the site was cleared in Fall 2025. Construction is anticipated to be complete in Summer 2028.
