Moffitt Library temporarily closed in January 2022 for a seismic strengthening project that wrapped 86 columns on levels one through five with structural carbon fiber reinforcing wrap. The columns were then encased in plaster, which is intended to match the appearance of existing columns. The project removed and replaced some existing building components to allow for the installation of the fiber wrap, including nonstructural walls, ceilings, mechanical and electrical systems, plumbing, and fire detection and suppression systems. Press Café, the Free Speech Movement Café, and the third-floor terrace remained open throughout construction.
Moffitt Library reopened eight months later in August 2022 for the start of the fall semester.
