Project Background
A new home for the Innovative Genomics Institute (IGI) and Bakar Labs is being developed to advance health and agricultural applications of genome editing technology and to provide space for startup companies expanding beyond current campus incubator facilities.
The building will provide IGI researchers with the opportunity to apply CRISPR genome editing to advance science and technology in human therapeutics, agricultural engineering, and other applications.
Designed to foster inclusive innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration, the building will serve as a dynamic hub for researchers and entrepreneurs. In addition to laboratory and administrative space, the building will feature conference rooms, shared work areas, and informal gathering spaces. It will also include a landscaped courtyard shared with the adjacent Bakar Labs for Energy & Materials, providing a welcoming outdoor space for both informal use and organized events.
The building reflects UC Berkeley's commitment to sustainable design. The project will be all-electric, incorporate a rooftop solar array, and achieve a minimum of LEED Gold certification. Additional design features include high-efficiency building systems, a high-performance envelope, and low-carbon construction materials.
Construction is expected to begin in Spring 2026 and last approximately three years.
