Project Background

Plans are underway to build a new satellite campus in Emeryville that will include a new outpatient clinic that will nearly double campus clinical capacity, expand opportunities for world-class education and research, and advance an exciting new model for integrated pediatric optometric care.

The clinic in Emeryville – which will operate under the umbrella of the The Herbert Wertheim Centers of Excellence for Eyecare and Vision Health – will deliver an integrated model of pediatric eye care and vision health that encompasses everything from well-baby and toddler pediatric clinics to disease management, binocular vision, vision therapy, children's contact lenses, special needs eye care, myopia control and more.

The existing University Eye Center was designed in 1978 for 5,000 patient visits annually. The combined number of patient visits to the University Eye Center and the Tang Center now exceeds 60,000 annually, making it difficult to meet growing demand. The new Emeryville clinic will double our clinical capacity, expand opportunities for world-class education and research, and advance an exciting new model for integrated pediatric optometric care.

Construction of the replacement of the new satellite campus began in June 2024, with an anticipated timeline for completion in Early 2026.
