Project Background
The Channing-Bowditch Student Housing project is a residential development that will be located at the southwest corner of Channing Way and Bowditch Street. The 1.98-acre site is positioned within Berkeley's Southside neighborhood, approximately two blocks from the UC Berkeley campus. The project area is bounded by Channing Way, Bowditch Street, and Haste Street, and sits adjacent to the existing Maximino Martinez Commons student housing.
The primary objective of the Channing-Bowditch Student Housing project is to address the critical need for high-quality, accessible student housing in close proximity to campus, while fostering a sense of community through shared amenities. The development envisions an approximately 550,000 square-foot complex that will provide more than 1,500 beds for undergraduate students. By creating a centralized living and dining hub, the project supports the university’s long-range goals for student housing and academic success, offering a modern residential experience that reduces the need for vehicular commuting and places students steps away from their academic life.
The project’s design balances contemporary architecture with a deep respect for the site’s historic character through the preservation and integration of Anna Head Buildings A (Alumnae Hall), E, and F. The new construction will feature a 26-story tower along Channing Way and a 14-story building along Bowditch Street, tiered to create a dynamic skyline. The first two levels of these new buildings will serve as a podium for student life, containing dining facilities, a fitness center, and areas for academic study and socialization. To integrate the new and historic elements, the ground floor of the new buildings will connect directly to historic Alumnae Hall, which is being incorporated into the student dining area.
The new buildings are designed with material selections and textured detailing that complement the historic buildings while providing modern amenities and terraces that overlook a shared central courtyard.
The project is currently in the planning & design phase, and a timeline for construction has not yet been finalized.
